This event marks a significant milestone for Viettel in its efforts to implement the "Vietnam international optical cable development strategy to 2030, with a vision to 2035" outlined by the Ministry of Information and Communications. With the goal of becoming a regional data hub, Vietnam's international optical cable infrastructure is identified as a crucial component of digital infrastructure that must be prioritized for investment. This ensures Vietnam's international connectivity with ultra-large capacity, ultra-wide bandwidth, sustainable, green, intelligent, open, and secure connections to promote national digital transformation, digital economy development, social digitalization, and international integration.
According to this strategy, by 2030, Vietnam aims to increase the total number of undersea optical cables to at least 15 lines with a total capacity of at least 334 Tbps. Among these, at least two undersea optical cables should be operated by Vietnam, prioritizing short lines that connect directly to major digital hubs in the Asia region. Additionally, the undersea optical cable system will be evenly distributed across three directions: connecting to the East Sea to the north, connecting to the south, and connecting to the southern sea areas.
Recognizing its role, Viettel has closely followed the strategic direction of the Ministry of Information and Communications to propose and implement undersea optical cable projects with a vision to 2030. The goal is to meet capacity demands and ensure the safety of Viettel's network connections in all situations, as well as national information security. The Vietnam - Singapore Cable System (VTS) is a key focus for Viettel.
Under the agreement with Singtel, the two parties plan to construct the VTS mainline with a configuration of 8 fiber pairs (8FP), using the latest wavelength-division multiplexing technology. The landing stations will be managed by Viettel in Vietnam and Singtel in Singapore. Additionally, the cable is expected to have branches landing in Cambodia, Thailand, and Malaysia, with the system expected to be operational by Q2.2027.

The VTS cable will be the first jointly founded by the largest telecom operators in Vietnam and Singapore, promising to be the shortest cable directly connecting Vietnam to Asia's largest digital hub in Singapore, using the most advanced bandwidth and technology. This project aligns with Vietnam's international optical cable development strategy to 2030, with a vision to 2035. Once operational, the cable will add hundreds of Tbps to Viettel's total international connection capacity, providing a significant amount of high-speed capacity and opening a new southern connection route. This will enhance network redundancy and safety for Viettel's international connectivity infrastructure and for Vietnam in general.
Mr. Nguyen Manh Ho, General Director of Viettel Solutions, stated: "By investing in the VTS cable, Viettel reaffirms its role as a pioneer in partnering with the government to build and develop Vietnam's digital infrastructure, promoting comprehensive digital transformation, meeting high-speed data transmission needs, effectively applying 4.0 technologies, and ensuring national communication security."
At the signing ceremony, Mr. Ooi Seng Keat, Vice President (Carrier Services) at Singapore Telecom, emphasized: "Vietnam is one of the fastest-growing digital economies in Southeast Asia, with businesses and consumers adopting new technologies such as artificial intelligence and data-intensive applications. The construction of the VTS cable will meet the increasing demand for higher bandwidth and lower latency connections. We look forward to collaborating with Viettel to support Vietnam's economic and digital growth ambitions and those of the region."
By investing in and owning new cables, Viettel aims to play a vital role in digital infrastructure, regional and international data transmission, meeting the requirements for high-speed international internet applications such as 5G, Internet of Things (IoT), automation, artificial intelligence (AI), and augmented/virtual reality (AR/VR). Additionally, it ensures network safety, redundancy, and quality of internet and other international connectivity services provided by Viettel, as well as national information security.
Previously, Viettel announced the investment in the largest bandwidth cable in Vietnam, the Asia Direct Cable (ADC), connecting to the three largest IP hubs in Asia (Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore), managing the landing station of this cable in Quy Nhon. Viettel is also the largest Vietnamese investor in the Asia Link Cable (ALC), connecting to two main IP hubs in Asia (Hong Kong, Singapore), and managing the landing station expected to be in Da Nang.
