The competition is organized and launched by the Radiological Society of North America (RNSA) on the Kaggle platform, with the participation of the world's largest community of AI and data science professionals.
The AI solution developed by Nguyen Hong Dang can automatically recognize signs of breast cancer from a very small area in a mammogram. This solution can be integrated into computer-aided diagnosis (CADx systems) to improve accuracy in diagnosis and treatment.
According to the jury's assessment, Nguyen Hong Dang's solution has solved the data imbalance in AI model training. In the data file provided by the contest, the proportion of labeled malignant cancer samples accounted for only about 2% of the total number of samples, while the samples labeled as benign or normal accounted for 98%. Imbalanced Data can cause artificial intelligence to make false predictions.
Nguyen Manh Quy, Director of Viettel Cyberspace Center shared: “We are completing the solution into a service on the Viettel AI Platform. Hospitals, medical organizations and individuals can easily access and use them for work. This solution will save time and cost compared to Self-Studying Machine Learning.”
To win the contest, Nguyen Hong Dang received great support from Viettel Cyberspace Center with the access to the Center's AI research knowledge and supercomputer infrastructure in the top 500 most powerful computers in the world, whose the performance of 20 Petaflops to optimize algorithms.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), breast cancer is the most common cancer globally. Breast cancer screening has been shown to reduce cancer mortality by up to 40%, where artificial intelligence tools have the potential to make the screening process more valuable and effective.
