Bitel’s Effective Business Operations Strengthen Bilateral Relations
Starting operations in Peru in 2014, Bitel has been a driving force in expanding telecommunications and internet access in this South American nation. Bitel has raised internet usage from 40% to 80% of the population and has reduced mobile data rates by 30 times compared to earlier levels. Bitel is the most popular network among customers in Peru.
Bitel is the most effective and fastest-growing telecommunications company in Peru, with an average annual revenue growth of 38%.
With 8,500 base stations and 40,000 km of fiber-optic cable, Bitel provides coverage across all provinces nationwide, including remote areas such as the Amazon and high-altitude cities like Cusco, Ancash, and Pasco (at elevations between 3,300-4,300m). Bitel’s extensive infrastructure has brought services to places other operators cannot yet reach.
By integrating core business activities with social initiatives, Bitel has become part of the Peruvian community, creating sustainable value for local residents. In 2022, Bitel was honored by Peru’s Congressional Education Committee for its contributions to the industry over eight years, including a program providing free internet to 4,700 schools nationwide. This accomplishment contributed to Viettel being recognized by Fortune as one of the top three global companies with significant, positive social impacts.
After a decade in business, Bitel was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Prime Minister of Vietnam for supporting the Peruvian government’s cultural, social development, and key political events, contributing to economic cooperation and the friendship between the two countries and peoples.
Pioneering Technology Development and Digital Transformation in Peru
Since mid-2024, Bitel has developed a 5G network and, on November 11, officially became the first network in Peru to roll out 5G at scale.
Bitel's smart city solutions, implemented in areas such as Barrios Altos, Salaverry, Chota, Cusco, Moche, and Breña, have helped reduce crime by 84% and traffic accidents by 66%. This technology is expected to expand to other regions, giving local authorities and residents tools to improve communication, management, and quality of life. Bitel also provides cybersecurity services for 100% of police stations, healthcare facilities, and airports nationwide.
Bitel’s e-wallet, Bipay, partners with the Central Bank of Peru to help unbanked citizens access digital financial and payment services.
Chairman and CEO of Viettel Group Tao Duc Thang affirmed: “Bitel aligns its operations with Peru’s development. In the next phase, Bitel will become the leading telecommunications and digital technology company in Peru, deeply involved in the nation’s digital transformation.”
“In addition to economic benefits, Viettel's overseas investments contribute to cultural diplomacy, defense diplomacy, and the global spread of Vietnam’s image, people, and achievements,” said Viettel’s CEO.
Viettel began its international investments in 2006 and is now the leader in 7 out of 10 foreign markets. In 2023, Viettel’s overseas revenue reached a record high of USD 3.6 billion, marking the second consecutive year of nearly USD 400 million (approximately VND 10 trillion) in repatriated funds from these markets. Viettel’s global operations reinforce Vietnam's capability and position on the international stage.
