On Monday 7th November, 2011, Metfone swept the board at the 13th annual World Communication Awards winning award for “Best Operator in a Developing Market” at the World Communications Awards 2011.

Announced at a glittering awards ceremony at London’s Park Lane Hilton in the UK, Metfone beat strong competition from the likes of Orange, Axis and CVT Group to take home the top prize.

Winners of other categories on the night included Hutchison Telecom Hong Kongs, SingTel, AT&T, Telefonica, China Telecoms, Vodafone Global Enterprises, Bharti Airtel and Verizon and the event was attended by over 500 of the industry’s top executives from across the globe.

The World Communications Awards are the foremost global telecoms awards and “recognize the companies and individuals responsible for the innovations, achievements and great new services that are helping to build tomorrow’s industry”. They are open to all communications providers across the globe from traditional carriers and service providers to multimedia content providers.

The award “Best operator in a Developing Market” is awarded to operators with innovative and unique solutions that help them to overcome a developing market characteristic to create values to the society, community, customers and operator’s business.

This award, going to Metfone - a Cambodian Network, acknowledged the impressive development of telecom Industry in Cambodia. Only in two years between 2009-2011, Cambodia telecom market saw mobile penetration increasing by 6 times, from a low 15% to around 100%, fixed phone penetration per household increasing by 10 times, from 2% to 20% and Internet broadband penetration increasing by 8 times, from 0,5% to 2%. Mobile and fixed coverage has reached 100% residents, fiber optic network reached 90% total communes, which ensures infrastructure to deploy “E Government’, free Internet to all public schools and broadband to every household. Infrastructure penetration has been increased to 830 BTS per one million inhabitants and 1,600 km fiber cable per one million inhabitants (higher than the world’s average of around 200 BTS and 1,000 km fiber cable per one million inhabitants).

The uniform solution between the Industry and operators including Metfone was attributed to these achievements. In line with the policy by the Government and the Industry to enable telecom services, especially broadband connections to every household, rural, remote and isolated areas, Metfone think that telecom should be a commodity for any (anywhere, anytime, anybody and any price). Thus, Metfone’s network has been expanded to cover every village with over 5,500 BTS and 16,000 km fiber cable, contributing up to 80% and 45% of total km cable and base stations of the whole country respectively.

In commenting on winning the World Communications Award, Metfone’s representative, Ms. Lim Tevy said: “The award is testament to the great effort by Cambodia’s people and telecom industry and Metfone is just a representative to receive the award. It’s is truly an honor for Metfone to bring pride to the Kingdom. On behalf of Metfone, I would like to take this opportunity to express the sincerest thanks to the Government, Ministries and Agencies, people, customers and all other operators in Cambodia for their ongoing cooperation and support”.

Metfone's efforts to adapt to the specific characteristics of Cambodian market impressed the judging panel. "A textbook entry stratergy which has helped transform the Cambodian Telecom landscape,"said one of the judges, awarding maximum points to Metfone. Others highlighted the "impressive growth statistics" included in Metfone's entry, as well as its plans to cover rural areas

Launched in 2009, Metfone currently is the largest telecom provider with 48% market share and over 7 million subscribers among 8 operators in Cambodia.

Metfone, Cambodia’s representative was selected by Frost and Sullivan to grant “the Most Promising Provider of the Year” award in 2010 for the aforesaid great efforts.
